I was skeptical about ordering lobster from Maine, when I live in the western US. But the lobster tails that are available locally are small (3-4 ounces), expensive, and of middling quality. So, I took the plunge. By 10:30 the next morning, my order of 4 pounds of lobster tails arrived -- packed in a box, surrounded by sealed ice packs, inside a cooler packed inside a cardboard box. The ice packs and lobsters were still frozen solid, with none of the lobsters stuck together. Yay, for individual quick freezing!

The next test was figuring out whether 4 pounds of lobster were actually sent. The item description was 10-12 lobsters tails weighing between 5 and 6 ounces. Well, ten 6-ounce lobster tails (60 ounces) would not equal four pounds (64 ounces), neither would twelve 5-ounce tails (also 60 ounces). I weighed the lobsters while still in the plastic bag, and the scale showed 73 ounces. I actually received 13 lobster tails, which was a wonderful surprise.

The next thing I was curious about was the extent to which the tails were brined. Who hasn't thawed lobster or shrimp, and ended up with a puddle of salty water? I thawed the bonus 13th tail, and got exactly 1 tablespoon of liquid. So far, so good.

Of course, the ultimate test is how the lobster tastes. The meat is sweet and firm. There is no fishy taste, and no parts of the tail were rubbery, mealy, or watery. Delicious!

The only less-than-awesome part has nothing to do with ShopLobster. Instead, I did not do my homework before trying to vacuum seal the tails. Uh yeah, lobster tails have spines. Consequently, the spines poked holes in the first three bags. But a quick online search showed a few different ways to vacuum seal tails to prevent the bags from being punctured. So the story has a happy ending. :)

My family was looking for something different to serve for a holiday meal this year and I had seen lobster advertised for sale by our local grocer which gave me the idea for Christmas Eve lobster rolls. After a little research it was easy to see that our local grocer (we live in Middle of Nowhere, Illinois) was not the place to purchase our lobster and I discovered ShopLobster online. Absolutely perfect, seamless experience from ordering to receiving our expertly packaged frozen lobster tails exactly when promised. My family still raves about the lobster rolls and we will be serving the final four tails today, New Years Day.
